On Saturday, September 26, 2015 the 19th annual Family Health & Fitness Day will be celebrated at many locations throughout the country. The U.S. Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health is promoting family involvement in physical activity. The opportunities available will vary by each site – health screenings, walking events, games and health information workshops may be among them.
It is critical to develop good physical activity habits in our children at a young age because these preferences will shape their choices and behaviors for years to come. Regular exercise and physical activity increase physical and mental health, as well as, improving sleep, reducing stress, increasing attentiveness for learning and minimizes illness.
Family time spent together can include physical fitness, which is good for everyone. Having our children see their parents being involved is encouraging for them.
Some ideas for family fitness are:
- Scheduling a walk, several days a week at the same time, and including everyone
- Keep physical activities simple so everyone can enjoy them
- Get involved by participating in a 5K for a good cause and teach the children about the reason for the walk/run
- Almost any outdoor activity will include some level of fitness – bicycling, going to a park, walking/playing with a family pet
With the increase in the amount of time everyone is spending in front of a screen – computer, video game, television – we are seeing an increase in obesity. Incorporating some of the ideas above into your daily routine will decrease this risk.
Check your local newspaper to see if there is a Family Health & Fitness Day scheduled in your area this weekend!
Enjoy some fun family time!!
