June is National Safety Month
There are so many fun activities to do outside in the summer. Remember these safety tips so everyone has a fun time!
Fireworks Safety
- Leave Fireworks to the Professionals
- If you plan to use them at home make sure they are legal
- Be Careful with Sparklers
- Sparklers burn at up to 1,200 degrees
- Children should be supervised around fireworks at all times
- Take Some Simple Precautions
- Do not wear loose clothing around fireworks
- Only use outside
- Point fireworks away from homes and ignite them away from all flammable substances
- Be prepared for an accident or injury
- Keep a working fire extinguisher nearby and know how to use it
- Stay several feet away from lit fireworks and do not go near a faulty firework until it has been sprayed with a fire extinguisher or doused with water
Bonfire Safety
- Build bonfire in a safe location away from danger
- Never light a bonfire with a flammable liquid
- Stay a safe distance from the flames
- Pour water on the embers prior to walking away
Pool Safety
- Never leave a child unattended in or near water
- Teach children how to swim and to stay away from drains
- Know how to perform CPR on children and adults
Sun Safety
- Look for shade
- Wear protective clothing, including a wide-brimmed hat
- Wear sunscreen every day and reapply as recommended
- Sun protection factor (SPF) should be at least 30 and ‘broad spectrum’ to protect from UVA and UVB rays
- Wear sunglasses with UV protection
- Limit exposure to the sun, especially between the hours of 10AM and 2PM
Always stay hydrated – water is best.
